Idris

“I am head of the Magiontology Archives and an agent for the Society. What else is there to say, really?”

-Idris

Magiontology Society Agent and Head Archivist

Name(s): Idris
Species: Vampyrus

Idris is the only full magion among the Magiontology Society agents, although (as he would point out), vampires do not quite exemplify magical lifeforms, being undead and not being born magions. Like many vampires, Idris keeps much of his personal history to himself, but he does seem particularly guarded.

The first mention of Idris in relation to the history of magiontology is from the 19th century, although it is estimated that he is quite a bit older. He is mentioned as an escort, close associate and sometimes representative of Ælfgifu, another vampire who came to be a central figure in the history of magiontlogy. Ælfgifu made contact with Göran Elias Pederssen, a magionologist, who , like her, believed in human-magion cooperation. Since the period’s social rules did not allow her freedom of action, Ælfgifu asked Idris to join her efforts. A plan to establish a magiontology research circle began to take form, and in 1889 Idris was one of the founding members of the Magiontology Circle. At the time, Ælfgifu was the leading figure, with Idris only assisting. It seems that he never felt fully comfortable with the idea, and, unfortunately, he was proven right. Idris and Göran's grandson, Karl Elias Pederssen became convinced that some of the members were using the Circle to reach magions in order to practice parasitical magic. The culprits were never caught. Idris and Karl had their suspicions, but before anything could be done, the Circle was disbanded in January 1892. The affair left Idris acutely aware of forces wishing to use magions for their magic and raised his guard even higher. However, his friendship with Karl and a few other trusted former Circle members grew stronger and he recognized the value of such ties for the future of magiontology and of magions in general.

Idris' familiarity with magion and magical history lore suggests that he was a practicing archivist long before the Magiontology Archives were officially inaugurated in 1985. The officiating of the archives did help enlarge the collection, and Idris is constantly busy with adding more sources. He was a natural choice for an agent when the Magiontology Society was established, and takes the position very seriously. In some ways, he is the head of the agents, because of his experience, knowledge and connections. However, in field assignments, Mabyn generally takes the lead, since her personality and training make her more suited to it. These days, especially since the Geists joined, Idris rarely goes out on field assignments, both because he is busy with archivist duties and, well, he doesn't want to.

“I wonder how horrified he would be if I called him a father figure? He’s the closest thing I have. I guess. But I don't really think of him like that. He’s my teacher, my friend and... he’s a lot of things.”

-Griffin

“There’s so much I don’t know about Idris, but I know him. He can seem standoffish, but no one cares as much as he does, as deeply. I don’t know if it’s a vampire thing, an immortal thing or just an Idris thing. He’s the best friend I could hope for - and I know I was nothing he hoped for – but he helped anyway, and he was willing to let me, us, not just into his home, but into his life.”

-Mabyn

“He knows SO much! It’s so cool. I think I always liked the idea of vampires and immortals and stuff because of how much you can learn, and Idris is just – exactly that! I know he hides a lot, but I think it’s more out of habit that actually not trusting us. Besides – can you imagine how long his life story is? Like, where do you even start?”

-Kas

“It’s kinda funny how much he’s not like pop-culture vampires. Honestly? I was a little disappointed at first, I mean, he’s charming – when he feels like it – and definitely keeps the mystery, but… there’s nothing really dark about him. Maybe it’s because he doesn’t have the whole ‘oh no, I’m a monster, boohoo, my immortal soul, blah’ vibe. Which, really – much better mental health.”
